Freedom from Debt Bondage

Background Information

Pakistan is a signatory to 36 conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO), including two fundamental conventions on forced labor (Conventions 29 and 105). Since 1992, a national legal and policy framework has been in place to protect and promote the rights of bonded laborers. Despite efforts, millions of workers in Pakistan continue to endure contemporary forms of slavery, primarily in sectors such as agriculture, brick kilns, domestic service, carpet weaving, mining, and handicraft production.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the existence of laws and policies, the prevalence of bonded labor persists due to factors such as the exploitation of familial bonds, illiteracy, poverty, and the lack of enforcement of existing regulations. Workers, often from the poorest segments of society, find themselves trapped in debt bondage, enduring harsh working conditions, and lacking access to basic amenities and healthcare. Children are forced to forego education and contribute to family debts, perpetuating the cycle of exploitation across generations.

Justification

The situation demands urgent attention and intervention. Business owners exploit vulnerable laborers, disregarding legal mandates and human rights principles. The lack of effective implementation of laws, particularly after the 18th Amendment, underscores the need for comprehensive strategies to address the root causes of bonded labor and provide pathways to freedom and dignity for affected individuals and families.

The Project

Our project aims to intervene directly in the lives of those vulnerable to or trapped in debt bondage, offering holistic support to break free from exploitation and rebuild their lives. By raising awareness, providing legal aid, offering financial assistance, creating job opportunities, and ensuring access to education and necessities, we aspire to empower individuals and communities affected by bonded labor.

Strategies

  • Raise Awareness and Create Hope: Engage communities through awareness campaigns to educate them about their rights and possibilities for liberation.
  • Debt Redemption and Legal Assistance: Facilitate the release of individuals by paying off their debts and providing legal aid to navigate complex legal systems.
  • Shelter and Basic Facilities: Provide safe shelter and essential amenities to improve living conditions for liberated individuals and families.

Job Creation and Education

Develop vocational training programs and job opportunities to enable economic independence, while ensuring children have access to quality education.

Monitoring and Evaluation

Implement rigorous monitoring and evaluation mechanisms to track progress, ensure accountability, and measure the impact of interventions.

Expected Results

Through this project, we anticipate empowering bonded laborers to reclaim their agency, break free from exploitation, and build sustainable livelihoods for themselves and future generations. By providing pathways to education, economic independence, and social integration, we aim to contribute to reducing poverty and promoting human dignity.

Appeal for Contribution

We recognize the magnitude of the task ahead and the resources required to effect meaningful change. We appeal to individuals, organizations, and donors to join us in this noble endeavor. Your generous support can make a profound difference in the lives of those trapped in bondage, offering them hope, dignity, and the opportunity for a better future.
Together, let us stand against exploitation and injustice, and work for these families in Pakistan where every individual is free to realize their full potential and live a life of dignity and prosperity.
